Endgame Ω The Walker in Shadows

Edit

Appearance

The traveler's shadowy and massive form fills the doorway. His dark grey cloak obscures in its depths a huge chest, massive arms, powerful mailed hands and column-like legs. Small inhuman, alien jointed limbs click and clatter against something solid in the dark folds of his cloak. Hidden mouths drink in the scents and taste of life and shiver with unnatural ravenous hunger. Your attention drifts up his grey helm past its lower half veiled (or is it muzzled) in dark silk. You are drawn to the eyes behind the iron slits. Those endless pools, sometimes dark, sometimes glowing, reflect back forgotten paths and strange lands unseen by mortal man.

Suddenly from the traveler a painfully powerful and inhumanly deep voice swells and breaks like a tide in your chest: "ENDGAME HAS COME FOR YOU!"

From somewhere within the travelers shadowy cloak two unbearably dark spidery forms erupt. They are so dark that it pains your eyes to see them. They skitter across the floorboards unerringly following their senses towards you. From somewhere else within those inky folds a broadsword emerges. It seems to ooze out of nowhere into the strangers powerful right hand. Blue sparks crackle and play across the blade: The air fills with the warning smell of ozone: Your nape hairs rise in answer.

The metres quickly measured between you seem more than enough to allow you flight: But before you can move the air PULSES with energy, and the traveler, this Walker In Shadow, covers all the ground between you in a single impossible step. His enormous frame's sudden, violent, imposition on your space nails you into your corner. That terrible head tilts down to gaze at your trembling powerless frame. With unnatural and impossible strength his sinister mailed hand now holds your throbbing skull firm; Your body's terror runs down your leg and pools yellow at your feet.

An ugly seam appears down the vertical middle of the Walker's -- mask? With a faint hiss the faceplate, untouched, opens slowly outwards and the silk muzzle drops down. Your panicking orbs tear at their sockets in a final attempt to escape; but this last feeble resistance is entirely futile. His visage finally unshadowed reveals his mockery of a face. Your lungs impulsively react with a scream; but that brings no relief; So you scream again. The horror of that awful countenance batters your soul like a filthy mallet pounding a living eyeball. Your mind races for the only exit it can find: The many-angled liberation of MADNESS!

Base of Operations

The Path of Endgame is an extra-dimensional pathway that links Endgame with members of the Endgame Connection. It is a Warren that forms a straight path unimpeded by geography between any two points. Other immortals can use the path after petitioning Endgame successfully and spending power to attune to it. When anyone other than Endgame uses it they must keep both ends open as part of a minimum team of two. So one of them must first walk the path to the destination while the other holds the origin gate open. Once the other side has been reached then the last person can release the original entrance which closes of its own accord while any other traveler holds the destination gate open. Once the last person exits the destination then the path closes. Endgame suffers no such restriction. The Pathway also can provide temporary power to those initiated in its ways. Endgame is always traveling and the Path of Endgame enables him to travel unseen by prying eyes.

Edit

Transport

Endgame can walk to any place he can imagine, provided he has sufficient power.

Character

There is much debate over Endgame's motivations and morality. He uses weapons and skills associated with deplorable professions, appears to be well on his way to becoming a fully fledged horror, and naturally walks in and perceives dimensions that drive others mad. His visage is so ghastly as to have driven fellow immortals insane. He has had amorous liaisons with (and survived quite happily) Mrs Fang, and there is a rumour of some connection to a great female spider-like entity of elemental hunger. He perceives unlight with little effort and is capable of manipulating it.

Conversely all his (recorded) enemies to date have been of the what most would call "evil" variety. He is known to protect ordinary humans often at significant personal risk, from harm. His own faction, the Endgame Connection, admits no evil members. He possesses the strength of ten, one of very few immortals who can claim the ability (which relies entirely on the purity of the heart). He appears quite the philanthropist and he has on more than one occasion raised fellow adventurers to immortality without charge. His only requirement of his beneficiaries to date has been that they "pass it on." Indeed he has even come to their aid when there has been no apparent benefit to himself.

Of course this might all be just some horrible ruse. He seems extremely dark. And what about that connection to the great spider like being of elemental hunger? Can he be trusted?

There is indeed much debate over Endgame's motivations and morality.

Special Abilities

Endgame is extremely strong. He is capable at least of throwing a horse and hansom cab or of lifting an end of a train carriage or perhaps of easily crushing someone to death. He is also an accomplished wrestler which brings us to this next ability. Endgame is able to prevent the magic of others when he puts his hands on them. Apparently mages find this particular combination of strength, wrestling ability and antimagic grip particularly disconcerting.

It is rumoured that the Walker in Shadow can assume the form of a deadly and large half-spider half-man. This abomination is even stronger than his normal form and is rumoured to be a consequence of his unnatural origin. An origin linked inevitably with the legendary, ancient, and evil great spider Ungoliant. If the rumours are true then he can preserve things in cocoons of silk and is capable of spinning sticky and extremely strong webs and lines. With 8 limbs and that hideous strength coursing through them all it is reasonable to assume that anyone seeking to wrestle with him is going to end up in a dark and hidden larder somewhere. Seeing as the forms upper body is reported to be humanoid it is highly unlikely that either his spell casting or his skill with a sword is impeded at all. Of course he can travel on any surface as well.

As already mentioned, Endgame can "walk" to any place he can imagine. He can also take others with him. Endgame has at times been contracted to create middlemarches for other immortals. It is unknown which beings he has done this for, or indeed the locations of these middlemarches. Endgame does not speak on it.

A number of artifacts in The Walkers possession have enabled him to engage armies personally. It is rumoured that he possesses the famed Orb of Storms.

Agents

It is unclear whether the Sisters of Hunger that (apparently) serve him in its multiple forms are Agents. No-one asks him questions about it.
